Once again, my favorite Entertaining Contributor, Melissa from Truly Chic Inspirations is back to share some of her favorite tips and tricks when it comes to making your own cupcakes…and she’s even sharing her favorite recipe for icing! I know I’ve tried many different types of buttercream icing, and this one sounds delicious! Enjoy!

I’m no baking pro and I still have lots to learn but after taking a cake decorating 101 class I find cake/cupcake decorating much more enjoyable. Plus, I have a better understanding of using specific items and how helpful they really are.
My Buttercream Icing recipe
(I learned this in my Wilton class, but made a few changes)
Ingredients:
1 cup solid white vegetable shortening (crisco, I prefer)
1 teaspoon vanilla or almond flavor
10 teaspoons of water
1lb confectioners’ sugar (I prefer 10x)
1 tbsp Wilton Meringue Powder
Directions:
Mix shortening, flavor, and meringue powder. Slowly add confectioners’ sugar. Add water at your discretion, depending on the thickness you want of your icing 10 teaspoons might not be required. If you want your icing thin, continue to add water a teaspoon at a time.
A Few of My Favorite Items:

Featherweight bags.
My bags are stained colors from dye and are very soft, the more often they are used the longer they last. They are more comfortable than the plastic throw aways. {photo source}
Icing Spatulas.
They simply work better than a butter knife and they come angled tapered, and straight. {photo source}
Drop Flower Tip.
I use this tip on almost all of my cupcakes. It is simple and I love the swirl/twisting design when covering the cupcake in frosting. {photo source}
Wilton Pearlized Sprinkles.
They come in almost every coloring and look so pretty. I find that they add a nice and sometimes fancy touch to cupcakes. {photo source}
Have fun baking and decorating!!
