What I’m Reading This Month

A while ago, I asked a question on my Facebook page asking for people to share any books they’d read recently that they particularly enjoyed…and if they were appropriate for October/Halloween, all the better.  A couple of people recommended the first two books of the The All Souls Trilogy, so I downloaded the first book, A Discovery of Witches to my Kindle and started reading.

A Discovery of Witches is the story of a quiet, introverted, witch named Diana Bishop who meets and falls for a tall, dark, and handsome vampire who’s much, much older than he looks.  (Stop me if you’ve heard this one…) While there are many Twilight-esque references, the book is actually quite different.  It also makes me wonder, is there a standard behavior for vampires?? This is the second vampire book I’ve read, and their mannerisms, even aside from physical appearance, seem to be the same.  Curious…

It’s quite a long book at just over 600 pages, so even though I’ve been working on it for a while, I’m only about one-third of the way through it.  But, the characters and storyline are holding my attention, and the book has proved entertaining.  It’s an easy read and Deborah Harkness is quite skilled at setting the scene for the reader, and filling our heads with images of lovely scenery from England and France.

So far, I’m really enjoying this book.  It does seem like a slow read, but certainly not boring.  Pick it up and give it a try if you’re a fan of vampire novels!
