Entertaining: A Travel Themed Tablesetting

Recently, I was contacted by Stampendous and was asked if I’d be willing to test out a few of their products.  Considering that I like to add lots of DIY elements to my parties, in order to make them more personal as well as keep the costs down, I immediately said yes.  While browsing through their catalogs, I came across a large collection of travel themed stamps and immediately knew what I wanted to do…a travel themed table setting.  This would be a perfect idea for a Bon Voyage party, or for a birthday party for your favorite jetsetter.  The concept was to keep the colors neutral, with just a few pops of light pink here and there.  I’ll be sharing tutorials for some of the projects I did later on in the week, so be sure to stay tuned!

Here’s a list of the products I used if you’d like to order them for yourself!

Thanksgiving Table Runner

Yesterday, I shared this idea for a centerpiece that would fit right in on any Thanksgiving table, and today, I’m talking about table runners.  Some people prefer tablecloths, but I tend to prefer a simple runner.  A runner dresses up a plain, wood table without feeling stuffy, as a tablecloth feel.  Plus, you and your guests won’t have to worry about making a mess all over your perfectly white tablecloth.

I made this simple no-sew table runner out of a simple piece of burlap that I cut to fit perfectly on my table.  You know the rule about how to cut burlap in a straight line, don’t you?  Simply find where you’d like your cut to begin and pull out the string on the end nearest to where you’d like to cut.  If it’s a long piece of burlap, the string may break in the process, but that’s okay.  Just find where it broke and keep pulling.  Once you’ve completely removed the string, you’ll have a nice, obvious place to cut your burlap…no straight edge necessary!

A few weeks after I’d “made” my burlap runner, I decided it could use a little something more.  In order to make it appropriate for Thanksgiving, I pulled out my Sharpie marker and wrote “thankful”.  I had to go over it a few times, and make sure to use a Sharpie with a thicker tip as opposed to the thin, pen-like ones.

*entertaining tip*

This idea would work well as a replacement for place cards.  Burlap is inexpensive and easy to replace, so writing your guests name above their plate will serve as a creative and inexpensive replacement for the traditional place cards!

Thanksgiving Centerpiece Ideas

We all know what we think of when our thoughts turn to the perfect Thanksgiving table.  The specifics will of course, vary from person to person, but the general idea is always the same.  A table that emits a feeling of warmth and welcome, that makes people want to sit down and stay for a while.  While we so often stress about making sure that the food is perfect, it’s so easy to overlook the table decorations, and go with the old standbys that we’ve used year in and year out.  There’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing things this way, but if you find yourself looking for something new to try this year, let me share with you what I’ve done on my table this fall.  With just a little time, you can turn your table into a welcoming place that your guests will definitely want to spend some time!

Now, my dining room table is small.  It’s an oval shaped table with room for six chairs, even though we only use four.  Because of this, I only needed one centerpiece, but if your table is longer, try doing two…or even three if your table’s REALLY big! (Lucky you!)

This look was created by taking a wire hanger and untwisting it to make it one long piece of wire.  I then formed it into a circle, and re-twisted it to secure it into place.  Then, taking strips of burlap approximately 1″ wide and 4″ long, I tied the burlap around the wire one strip at a time.  This was pretty time consuming, and as always, when working with burlap, things get a little messy, but the finished look was worth the extra run of the vacuum.

I then placed the finished burlap wreath around the top of a cake plate, and added the pillar candles that I use on my table year round.  Obviously, you’d want to be extremely vigilant should you choose to light these, as you don’t want to set your dining room on fire…better plan is probably to not light them at all.  I know that’s my plan…fire is scary! But, if you definitely want candlelight on your table, instead of placing pillar candles directly on the cake plate, you could substitute a hurricane lamp with a pillar candle inside.  The effect will be the same, and your house will thank you!

Finally, I tucked in a few pumpkins that I bought extremely inexpensively.  Luckily, I bought a few extras because after just a couple of days I looked at one and saw that it had gotten all moldy…ewwww! So, after replacing the rotten pumpkin, my centerpiece was completed.  I’m actually dreading switching it up when it’s time to change for Christmas, I’m really enjoying my Thanksgiving table decor this year.  I guess that means I’m just going to have to up my game when it comes time to decorate for Christmas!
