{ENTERTAINING} Rustic Place Card Holder

Adding rustic and natural elements to a table setting is something that I love.  Even though I’m not necessarily an “outdoor girl”, bringing in elements of nature into my home is something I find comforting and calming.  So, I created these very simple rustic place card holders that you could use for your next party.  This look will work well for a party for adults, or for a fairy or woodland party for kids.  It’s a very versatile look that you can alter to fit your event.

instructions:

1.  After you’ve collected everything you need (and you most likely have everything you need in your house/yard), take your three 4″ sticks and arrange them in a design that would give you two sticks side by side and one sticking out towards the back.  The top of all the sticks need to be together.  It may take a little finagling, but you’ll get it.
2. If you prefer, you can add some hot glue to the top pieces to secure them a bit more. I didn’t use any for mine, however, and they’re holding together just fine. Wrap your twine or string around the top of the sticks until they feel secure.
3. Next, you’ll need to add the “shelf” that your place card will sit upon. Again, you can choose to use a bit of hot glue here. Then, secure more tightly by adding twine or string.
4. Add your place card, and you’re done!

Mario Inspired Birthday Party

My baby boy turned 8 last week, and he decided he wanted a Mario Kart birthday party.  Character inspired birthday parties are always tricky…we all want our kids to have unique parties, but we also want to make sure that they have the characters they love so much as a part of the festivities.  If it were up to my son, we’d have ordered every Mario item out of the Birthday Express catalog.  So, we compromised.  I think it turned out really cute, and most importantly, the birthday boy couldn’t have been more excited! Birthday Cake Popcorn!

I talk a lot about how I like to do my baking with items I have on hand.  While going through my cupboards this morning, I noticed I had a half package of candy coating just begging to be used.  Immediately my mind went to this recipe from Pizzazzerie that I recently read, but I knew I wanted to switch it up just a bit.  Enter, BIRTHDAY CAKE POPCORN!

BIRTHDAY CAKE POPCORN

Popped popcorn (I popped mine on the stove top.)
Half package of candy coating
White cake mix
Birthday sprinkles

DIRECTIONS:

1. Melt candy coating in the microwave or stove top.
2. Add DRY cake mix to the melted candy. I used 2 heaping tablespoons.
3. Pour candy coating over popcorn and mix together.
4. Add your birthday sprinkles and allow to cool.
5. Enjoy!

Take Me Out to the Ballgame Party!

This past weekend, we celebrated my son’s 7th birthday with a baseball themed party.  Not just ANY baseball party would do, however.  It had to be a St. Louis Cardinals baseball party, because we are HUGE Cardinals fans in this house!

Since the playoffs are just getting started in baseball, I thought today would be a perfect day to share what we did.  Even if you don’t have a birthday party coming up soon, this could be a great way to get people together to enjoy watching the playoffs!

I LOVE the “Welcome to Harris Stadium” sign created by Michele of Intrigue Design Studio…so creative! The “Colin” sign was actually supposed to be part of an adorable banner, but sadly, the color on my printer started to go out…so instead, it’s an adorable sign!

A Matt Holliday growth chart poster made a perfect backdrop for our cake table.  In addition to their take home treat, everyone also got to take home a baseball drink cup and a helmet ice cream bowl!

A baseball party isn’t a baseball party without hot dogs, nachos, and popcorn! If you don’t have one of these popcorn machines, you definitely want one! It makes the MOST delicious popcorn ever!

Cake was definitely not in short supply at this party!

All guests were asked to sign their name to this baseball as a keepsake for the birthday boy!

Everyone got a pack of baseball cards and a darling cookie from Firefly Confections to take home as their “Thanks for being part of the team!” gift!

The birthday boy was extremely happy with his baseball party, and we were lucky that the Cardinals snuck into the playoffs this year!

Go Cards!!

Our Homemade Father’s Day Gift to Dad

I know I’m a little late posting this, but when your husband does all the technical stuff on your website, you can’t put the Father’s Day post up before the father receives his gift! So, I’m posting it now, because not only is it an adorable Father’s Day gift, but it would also work well as a gift from the kids to dad on his birthday…or any day, really!

I was recently browsing Pinterest, (as I often do!) and came across this adorable picture:

As soon as I saw this picture, I just knew that I HAD to recreate something similar for my kids to do for their dad.  So, rather than buying the letters, which is adorable, I gave each kid a piece of card stock and told them to get creative.  How they turned out speaks volumes about their personalities! And the final result:

I find it hilarious that my daughter got out the water colors, and took her time using various colors and patterns, while my son basically drew two A’s and called it a day.  This boy has no time for art projects!

In total, the project probably took about an hour of my time and very little money.  (However, if you read this hubby, I slaved away for hours and hours, working my fingers to the bone!!) It would definitely make a great gift for any special occasion for dad…or mom!
